Who is Pastor Sammie Smimmo?

I was what some might call a “self-made” woman.  At the age of 16, I owned my first of what would be many companies in my lifetime; eventually becoming a millionaire in the housing industry as a Realtor and builder.  By most people’s standards, I had it all.  My life was a dream.

But in reality, my life was a nightmare.  My husband, a drug addict and philanderer left me after 16 years of marriage.  I spiraled into a terrible depression that caused me to lose everything, including my business and my fortune.

One night, in the midst of my personal devastation, I ended up in a hospital thinking I was having a heart attack.  But my visit to the hospital that night revealed that I had a lump in my breast, a lump that turned out to be cancer.  I had no money, no husband, and no insurance.  I felt desperately alone.

The doctor sent me to a clinic downtown where I was able to get the help I needed, and my battle against cancer began.  I was living in a tool shed, with no water and no bathroom, a place that I would call home for two years.  And it was there that God spoke to me about my work with the homeless.

I had been attending a singles group at my local church, and they were actively involved in serving the homeless.  One evening, on our way to serve, the leader from my church told me that I was going to share my story.  As I spoke, I realized that I really understood their story, and knew that God would use my own homelessness to connect with these people He was calling me to serve.  I had gone from a $600,000 home to a $150,000 home, to an RV, to a tool shed.  I grasped the humility and devastation of their lives.

I woke up one morning in my tool shed, and somehow I had rolled off the bed into the floor.  I rolled over onto my knees and asked the Lord what He wanted from me.  He told me then that He wanted me to serve the homeless, but I said, “God, I don’t have any food, any money . . .” and He told me not to worry, just to obey.  So I went to church a few days later and shared what God had told me to do.  My small group donated over $800 for me to buy food and feed the homeless!  And the Revivals in the Park were born.  I called that Ministry Mark 10:27 and God grew it, giving hope to thousands of homeless over the years.

Since that time, I have served the Lord by serving the homeless 7 days a week.  I have done everything from working in the food pantry, serving food to the homeless in the park, and even preaching the gospel. In July of 2012, while I was in Colorado doing mission work, the Lord told me to go to 52 shelters in 52 weeks across the United States!  How could I do anything but obey?  Thus, 5252 Ministries was born.

So here I am, healthy and cancer free, having survived breast cancer and 16 related surgeries, ready to embark upon this incredible God-sized journey!
